Eulogy for a Husband

“Make the most of the time you have.” Those were the words Jonathan lived by, a humble yet profound philosophy that guided every aspect of his extraordinary life.

I’m Emily, Jonathan’s wife and partner of 25 beautiful, adventurous years. As I look around this room at the sea of faces, some familiar, some new, I’m reminded of just how many lives my husband touched. Thank you all for being here today to celebrate the remarkable man he was.

Where do I even begin? Jonathan was a kaleidoscope of traits – an unstoppable force of optimism and kindness, wrapped in a quirky, clever package. Like that time he shocked me by trading in his sensible sedan for a cherry red convertible on a whim. When I asked him what possessed him, he just grinned and said, “Life’s too short to drive a beige car, Em!”

That zest for life extended to all areas, including our kitchen after midnight. Jonathan loved experimenting with strange food combos, like peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches. I can’t count how many times I shuffled downstairs to find him surrounded by an array of ingredients, lips stained purple from his latest “taste test.” He’d laugh at my scrunched nose and insist I try it – for science!

But as goofy as those antics were, they paled in comparison to the depth of devotion he showed our family. Jonathan’s number one priority was being the world’s best dad to Alex and Sophia. He built them the most epic treehouse a kid could dream of – a Swiss Family Robinson-inspired palace, with a rope bridge, trapdoors, even a lookout tower! Every nail he hammered was an act of love.

And he was our biggest cheerleader, whether coaching their soccer teams with overflowing enthusiasm or attending every school play and concert, beaming like it was a Broadway premiere. Jonathan treasured every moment with them, savoring the seemingly small joys that became lifelong memories – camping trips teaching them to fish, flying kites and running under the wind until they collapsed in a giggling heap.

His fatherly pride extended far beyond just our kids. At work, Jonathan mentored young engineers tirelessly, fostering their passion for sustainable development. He approached each new project with infectious excitement, likening it to crafting a place for future generations to play, breathe, and thrive. Parks around the city blossomed to life under his visionary leadership.

But as passionate as Jonathan was about his career and causes, his heart belonged to this family. He was my anchor in the stormiest of seas, keeping me afloat with his warmth, strength, and the unique way he made everything feel like it would work out for the best. Like that time our furnace died in the dead of winter – most husbands would panic, but not Jonathan. He just smiled, started casting about for extra blankets, and promised to build us an epic bonfire in the living room.

It was that ability to find joy and beauty in any situation that made Jonathan so special. He had a true zest for life, for chasing new experiences and squeezing every drop of magic out of each day. I was just along for the wildly fun, incredibly loving ride.

So today, as we gather to pay tribute to an amazing husband, father, friend, and human being, I hope you’ll join me in celebrating Jonathan’s vibrant spirit. He packed a universe of adventures into his 48 years, and we’re all the better for having been swept along.

While his physical form may be gone, Jonathan’s essence remains – in the parks he created, the warmth of campfire stories, the lingering smiles after laughter with friends, and the inspired minds of the engineers he mentored. His light will continue shining on all of us who loved him dearly.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for sharing this time together. Jonathan made the most of his time here, and by honoring his memory with joy, compassion and maybe an occasional peanut butter pickle sandwich, we can ensure that light burns eternal.
