Eulogy for William Arthur Thompson

Hi everyone, I’m Elizabeth, Bill’s daughter. It’s my honor to share a few stories about my dad today.

You know, when I think about what made Dad so special, I keep coming back to the little things. Like how his deep brown eyes would just twinkle whenever he started telling one of his animated tales from the Navy. Or his hearty, full-bellied laugh that seemed to make everyone around him feel warm and welcome.

Speaking of the Navy, that’s where Dad truly found his calling in life – serving his country with honor and courage. He earned medals and commendations, sure, but what mattered most was the sense of duty that guided his every action. After retiring, he just had to keep sharing those lessons by becoming a history teacher. Dad inspired so many kids to appreciate where we came from.

At home though, Dad was all about making memories. Who could forget our epic family road trips, piling into the station wagon to explore quirky roadside attractions and national parks? Or the annual ritual of Dad’s prizewinning tomato plants – he was so proud to share his green thumb bounties with the whole neighborhood.

Dad had a real knack for bringing people together too, whether organizing chess tournaments or sharing his model shipbuilding hobby with anyone who would listen. He just made friends everywhere he went – like Bob, his Navy buddy who became like a brother over the decades.

Most of all, Dad loved his family fiercer than anything. My wonderful mom Helen, his partner in everything. Us kids, Michael and me, who he taught the importance of integrity and looking forward. And those grandkids, Bryan and Sarah, who could do no wrong in Grandpa’s eyes.

So while we’re heartbroken he’s gone, we have to smile knowing Dad lived his life to the fullest. With honor, curiosity, and so much love. He showed us how to appreciate the little things that make each day truly meaningful.

Thank you all for being here to celebrate a life well-lived. I know Dad’s mischievous spirit is looking down feeling pretty darn proud of the wonderful community surrounding him today.
